In this documentary, we explore the experiences of Sudanese migrant workers to Saudi Arabia. Most of whom have been doubly dispossessed; firstly, by alienating them from their labour; and secondly, by enforcing taxes on their dependents. This has led to a situation where the Sudanese migrant worker is transformed into a modern slave. All this is facilitated by the notorious Kafala system.
Director Biography –
Mohamed Khougali was part of the 2019 Sudanese revolution that ousted the dictatorship of al-Bashir. ‘In the Shadows of Modernisation’ is Mohamed’s debut film.
