To escape a life filled with peril and economic hopelessness, dozens of young families pack into a small, barely seaworthy boat to risk a dangerous journey across the Mediterranean Sea, all in the pursuit of a new beginning.

Director Biography – Linda Corley, Joel Kaplan


Linda Corley is a ten-time Emmy award winning producer and writer who is well known for her storytelling in long form documentary. She started her career at the BBC and moved over to PBS where she became known for her documentaries, including Vizcaya, West Encounters East and Parkland, Healing a Community and a Nation. Parkland went on to film festivals around the country, winning best Florida Film in 2019. Recently Linda and her partner Joel Kaplan spent time in Lebanon covering a tragic boat wreck and recovery which became the basis for their documentary short entitled The Sons of Lebanon.

Besides being a published author, which includes her book The Kennedy Family Album, Linda’s recent work can be found on TLC with Return to Amish, Discovery Channel’s Kiddie Kai and PBS’s Medical Stories where she acts as Supervising Producer.

Joel Kaplan is the ultimate storyteller with his camera. His images, interviews, and intuition are all creative tools he engages to deliver a product that goes far beyond the ordinary. He believes it is the human element that communicates the heart and soul of every narrative. Mr. Kaplan shines as a director of photography on many national documentaries for PBS, including West Encounters East, Fragility of Tradition, the New American Crucible and most recently, Parkland, Healing a Community and a Nation. His work ventures beyond public television to include clients such as National Geographic Channel, Discovery Channel, HGTV, Hallmark Channel, VH-1, MTV, ABC sports, CNBC, TNN and the Travel Channel. Mr. Kaplan, co-owner of Daydream Productions, is the recipient of ten Emmy Awards and was recently awarded the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Silver Circle Award.
