Climate change is reshaping our world and bringing hardship for Africans across the continent. How can its people be empowered to face climate shocks and stressors and make informed decisions to move or stay now and in the future? Voices from the Frontlines tells the stories of the people experiencing the impacts of the climate crisis today. We get to follow them in their everyday life and hear their stories told in their own words.

Director Biography – Maarten Koets, Kamal Amakrane

Maarten started his career at the World Press Photo Foundation, merging his passions for global events and photography. He quickly advanced to lead their educational activities, focusing on masterclasses for emerging photographers and capacity building for photojournalists in the Global South. His work took him across Africa and into producing books, exhibitions, and websites, with recent forays into video and podcast production. He now operates as an independent consultant managing large, complex projects and media productions.

Kamal leads the Global Centre for Climate Mobility, advancing regional climate initiatives at the UN, and heads the Rising Nations Initiative to protect Pacific Atoll nations. He is Adjunct Professor at Columbia University and a former senior UN official with experience in peacekeeping and political missions, including Iraq and Myanmar. Kamal played a key role in the New York Declaration and Global Compact for Migration. He was a Yale World Fellow in 2012 and serves on the board of Tällberg Foundation.
