Director Biography – Roshni Ali, Deeptaroop Basu

Roshni Ali’s enchanting journey through the realms of imagery and storytelling commenced at the tender age of eight, where it took root in the dimly lit darkroom studio alongside her father in Kolkata. Together, they meticulously developed photographic negatives, and from those formative moments, Roshni’s profound affinity for visual storytelling began to blossom. It was clear from the very start that her path in life was destined for the world of art and narrative.
In her early years, Roshni was marked by an insatiable curiosity and an innate desire to learn. Her time at St. Xavier’s College in Kolkata, where she pursued Mass Communication and Videography, proved to be a pivotal turning point in her life. Here, she embarked on crafting short films that transcended the ordinary, delving deep into pressing societal and environmental issues.
One of the hallmarks of Roshni’s work has been her dedication to crafting poignant yet visually stunning films about the environment. Notable among these is her film ‘Seed of Hope,’ a powerful narrative that tells the story of women farmers who, in the face of a cyclonic crisis, came together to create a community seed bank to support their village.
Roshni’s lens has also ventured into the tea estates of Assam, where she beautifully portrays how these estates have not only created microclimates to improve weather conditions but have also become a place of refuge for the wild elephants of Assam.
Presently, Roshni Ali and Deeptaroop Basu have set her lens on the vibrant landscapes of Goa. Here, they are deeply immersed in the creation of an enthralling documentary titled “Counter Coral.” This project reflects their unwavering commitment to environmental causes as she explores the intricate process of creating artificial coral reefs in the coastal paradise of Goa.
