Miriam can’t figure it out: Her mother Marcella and she have lived estranged for as long as she can remember. As a little girl, she felt magically drawn to a photo showing her with two children she never knew. All her questions about her childhood remained unanswered. Now a mother herself, emigrated to Germany, she starts searching for her roots leading her to a family of guest workers from Italy, stranded in Bern.
In search of a forgotten childhood, her path leads her along the well-trodden, brutal and unfair paths of Italian guest workers in Switzerland in the post-war period.
In the process, she finds answers not only to the first years of her life, but also to what it means to be a mother, a woman, and a human being.
