Misawa Michio was born and raised in a small town near Tokyo, Japan. She married a Korean man through the Unification Church and immigrated to South Korea. She became a mother of two boys in Seoul. However, her husband died of liver cancer, and she was denied Korean citizenship by the Korean government for financial reasons. She is still living as a Japanese citizen, barely making a living by working as a temporary employee at a local welfare center. Her older son has a developmental disability, and her younger son fights with her every day. She thinks that her poor Korean language skills are a problem in communicating with her children. The only thing that gives her comfort is the Japanese women in the same situation she meets at the Unification Church. If she does not acquire Korean citizenship, she will have to return to Japan when her children become adults. She wants to travel around Korea’s beautiful mountains and attractions, but her situation does not allow it.
