The Newcomers investigates the challenges of new immigrants in rural Saskatchewan. The documentary explores contemporary immigrant experiences and weaves in historical context from the early waves of immigration into the province. The film chronicles the lives of five immigrants facing isolation in small-town Saskatchewan as some of them struggle to find acceptance in their new homes.

Director Biography – Theresa Kliem

Theresa Kliem was born and raised in Germany where she discovered her passion for radio journalism. After immigrating to Saskatoon, Canada, she eventually decided to go back to university for her Master of Journalism. At the University of Regina’s School of Journalism she started exploring video journalism for the first time and in 2021 she was the producer of the successful student documentary THE BEAST INSIDE MY HEAD. THE NEWCOMERS is Theresa’s first film as a director and second film as a producer.
